The height of plants varies from diminutive duckweeds just a few millimetres in length to California's giant sequoias exceeding 90 meters (300 feet) or higher. There are an estimated 390,900 different plant species known to science, and new species are being continuously identified, particularly from previously unexplored tropical regions of the world. Plants evolved from aquatic ancestors and subsequently migrated throughout the Earth's surface, inhabiting tropical, Arctic, desert and Alpine regions. Many species have relocated in fresh or saltwater to an aquatic habitat. Plants play a vital role in sustaining Earth's survival. The energy used by living organisms relies on the dynamic photosynthesis process, which is mostly performed by green plants. Through the basic sequence of chemical reactions that compose photosynthesis, radiant energy from the Sun is converted into organic chemical energy in the form of sugars. Both food chains originate with photosynthetic autotrophs (primary producers) in nature including green plants and algae. Primary producers, embodied by trees, shrubs, and herbs, are a significant source of energy contained in the leaves in the form of carbohydrates (sugars). These carbohydrates, produced in photosynthesis, are broken down into a process called respiration; numerous metabolic processes are fuelled by the smaller units of the sugar molecule and its products. The energy sources that support animal life in different community habitats are various parts of the plant (e.g. leaves). A photosynthesis by-product, oxygen, is essential to the animals. Plants also have a direct influence on the daily existence of human beings. Plants furnish food and flavourings; manufacturing raw materials such as wood, resins, fats, and rubber; cloth and cordage fibres; medical products; insecticides; and fuels. More than half the Earth's population relies on rice, corn (maize), and wheat grasses as their primary food source. The Plantae Kingdom contains species ranging in size from small mosses to giant trees. Despite this huge variation, all plants are multicellular and eukaryotic (that is, each cell has a membrane-bound nucleus containing the chromosomes). We usually have pigments (chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids), which play a central role in translating sunlight energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis. Therefore, most plants are autonomous of their nutritional (autotrophic) needs and store their excess food in the form of starch macromolecules. The comparatively few non-autotrophic plants have lost pigments and are nutrient-dependent of other species. While plants are non-motile species, some develop whiplike flagella propelled motile cells (gametes). Plant cells are surrounded by a more or less solid cell wall made up of carbohydrate cellulose, and neighbouring cells are linked by cytoplasm microscopic threads called plasmodesmata that cross the cell walls.
